While some drivers only experience stress when they’re on the road, for many, driving can actually be a great way to relax. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed at work or you simply want a getaway, taking a road trip could be right for you.

Planning a road trip is a great way to make driving relaxing, as you can avoid traffic, take scenic routes, and even go off road if you’d like. Novelist Jack Kerouac made the American road trip a rite of passage for many generations with his book On the Road, but not everyone has months for a soul-searching drive. Even if you just have a few hours, driving in a low-traffic area is a great way to get rid of stress.
Neil Shah, the author of The 10-Step Stress Solution, notes that drivers may prefer familiar routes if they are overloaded at work or school: “When stressed, our higher brain functions are therefore shut down. Driving to and from work will not require higher brain functions most of the time as it is a known route and familiar traffic condition. This can help clear and re-energise your mind.”
